About the event
This event is appreciatively being organized by Katie McGuire.
Please be advised that the itinerary and trail is a set course (changes will only be considered for extenuating circumstances i.e. part of the trail is washed out or closed)
All Trails link with trail description and route https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/ontario/top-of-the-giant (this is an out-and-back trail; NOT a loop)
All Trails rating: Hard / Total elevation gain: 577 m
Notes from past hikers who went in August: mosquitoes, need lots of water and snacks, good hiking shoes, calves burning, some muddy spots, shaded in parts BUT breathtaking views!
Itinerary:
- Hikers arrive at the trailhead at 9:30 am. Set out shortly thereafter.
- Hike for the day. Total 23 km, average 6-7 hours (All Trails) + time for breaks and lunch. - Estimate time back at trailhead around 5-5:30 pm. Depending on pace and break lengths.
Going will be weather and trail conditions dependent. I plan on making my first assessment prior to my flight to Thunder Bay on Friday; then I plan on making a final morning assessment on the day of.
Because this is a Provincial Park, there's a fee for car parking which can be purchased and reserved no earlier than 5 days in advance of the arrival date. I'll be looking into that in August. https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/
People can also connect directly to Katie and she'll organize a WhatsApp group for anyone interested in joining and/or coordinating rides.
